Blog Post #1 - Formal Letter

Subject: Self Introduction

To Mdm Fazilah,

My name is Lewis Wee, a graduate from Temasek Polytechnic with a Diploma in Infocomm and Network Engineering. The reason why I chose Engineering despite having a sea of choices is because of how intriguing machines and humans work in sync to interact with one another to get work done. It makes me eager to learn more and have a deeper understanding on whatever that goes on behind that human eyes do not usually give much attention and thoughts to. Being a student of Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Land), I am given the opportunity to build the future of Singapore’s public transport system.

In terms of communication weakness, I am not very strong in my vocabulary and grammar. At times, I may have trouble communicating my thoughts into words which then would lead to slight miscommunication. Nevertheless, the thesaurus will be my best friend in helping me improve my English. On the other hand, I am competent to stand in front of a crowd and present myself confidently. Most importantly, I am able to be a team player which would definitely help in group projects.

One of my two goals for this module is to sharpen my English writing skills so that upon graduation, I am able to write professionally. Having the ability to write clear and concise English is a skill that many lacks and it would be very advantageous if I were to be able to present myself properly especially in the real working world where the competition is everywhere.

Another goal for me is to be able to give and receive feedback appropriately. Undeniably, it is often tougher to receive negative feedback as I will question my work in return. Nonetheless, it is always good to have honest feedback so that I can improve on my work. Likewise, I hope that I can also benefit my friends and group mates with my feedback for them if need to, so that we can all learn together.

Thank you for your time to read this through.

Yours sincerely,
Lewis Wee

  4. Greetings Lewis

After reading through your blog, I believe that you are very passionate in engineering. Engineering is agreeably a main nature of how machines are designed and constructed in a way to meet a person’s need. Having said that, your curiosity in wanting to acquire more technical knowledge will motivate you immensely in your future career as working and improving public transport systems in Singapore.

Regarding your communication skillset, I am able to perceive you as a more vocalised individual, compared to your writing abilities. In light to the latter, I agree that a thesaurus is effective in providing you with more words. Besides this, reading more novels and news articles will result you in enhancing your expressions through your speaking and writing. I too agree that you are a team player who can manage conversations held during group projects. With more practice in writing, I believe you will have a greater competition edge to excel in the working world.

In my opinion to your blog, some sentences can be shortened so that your message is elevated with more clarity. However, I enjoyed my time reading through your blog as it covered all contents in great details. I wish you well in this module and to know you better too.

    Sincerely
    Joshua

  5. Dear Lewis

    Thank you for your letter.

You are the few who can stand comfortably to speak in front of a crowd - a strength that you mentioned you have.

You should expose yourself as much as possible to good writing so that you can model such good writing into your own. Practice makes perfect!

Best wishes in this module and at SIT!

    Kind regards
    Faz (Mdm)
